"My class consisted of just three students, including me. The pace of learning was rapid, but that was not a problem. We could always ask the teachers, who adapted the lessons to suit us. I want to thank you for the wonderful two weeks!"
"Anna went above and beyond in terms of helping me. From bringing me for activities around the city after class, to trying lots of delicious food, she really was so thoughtful. My host family were very friendly, polite and didn't speak any English with me."
"Thank you for being so considerate, and I'd like to take the opportunity to say how much I enjoyed both the standard of teaching and the homestay LTL arranged for me. I look forward to continuing my language training with LTL later this year!"
First of all, I must admit that I had expected something completely different from Beijing and also from LTL Mandarin School. Beijing was, in my mind a state-of-the-art metropolis full of technology and skyscrapers. LTL Mandarin School itself was a bit like a small and intimate university. Many students from all over the world would come to study the Chinese language together.
The fact that my ideas absolutely did not correspond to reality, was already evident in the breakfast on the first day. From the first moment I was impressed by the warm, familiar atmosphere, which had no resemblance to my fear of perhaps, a colder community. Andreas, about ten other new students and I sat together in a small Chinese restaurant, talked and shared plates full of Chinese ravioli, noodles and soup.
Beijing itself is not as up-to-date as most places as you would imagine. It’s a really diverse city. Modern areas are growing year on year but it still has a very traditional feel to it. Everywhere there are tiny, local Chinese shops, supermarkets and restaurants. Street vendors, free-roaming dogs and unusual two or three wheeled vehicles weave in and amongst the chaotic traffic.
My class consisted of just three students, including myself. The pace of learning was rapid, but that was not a problem. We could always ask the teachers, who adapted the lessons to suit us.
I will never forget our daily walks to the supermarket around the corner to buy an ice cream that was barely a few cents! Even at school there was a soft ice cream machine! I learned Chinese cooking with my host family and the calligraphy teacher became more of a friend than a teacher.
On my last day at LTL Mandarin School, the director of studies, Angela, said good-bye to me and said that I would always be welcome to come to her again.
LTL team, I want to thank you for the wonderful two weeks! I hope that I can come to Beijing once more and learn Mandarin with you.
From the moment my train arrived in Beihai until the moment I left, Anna took care of everything.
She was waiting at the train station for me when I arrived and put me in the taxi back when I left, simply fantastic service!
Anna went above and beyond in terms of helping me. From bringing me for activities around the city after class, to trying lots of delicious food, she really was so thoughtful. In terms of the organisation of classes, the flexibility was great in that Anna sat down with me on day 1 and we discussed what timetable would work for me best.
For example, I’m a morning person, so we had our classes from 9am-2pm with one hour break but this was always open to change which I thought was brilliant service. The class organisation was really great and I couldn’t ask for any more.
Regarding my accommodation, I stayed with a Homestay family. My host family were very friendly, polite and didn’t speak any English with me 🙂
The apartment was clean and modern. Food was plentiful. No complaints here!
Anna was also my teacher. She was a fantastic teacher, so experienced, knowledgable and most importantly, patient. I learned so much from her every lesson and my only regret is that I wasn’t in a position to stay for longer. I stayed for three weeks and felt as though I made great progress in this time, but next time I would prefer to stay for longer to really get the benefits of immersion!
During the course I had one issue I was concerned about which I mentioned to Katie in Beijing along with Anna. This issue was resolved instantly and they were so responsive and understanding.
Again, really fantastic customer service!
LTL advertised a small Chinese city with no foreigners and zero English beings spoken and this was most certainly the case! Beihai is a charming little city with very friendly people, beautiful beaches and warm (but not too warm!) weather. It really provided the perfect conditions for learning Chinese.
Thank you for being so considerate.
I’d like to take the opportunity to say how much I enjoyed both the standard of teaching and the homestay LTL arranged for me.
Everyone I met in Beihai was really friendly and generous and I’d especially like to pass on my thanks to my teacher who was very accommodating.
I look forward to continuing my language training with LTL later this year!
